Showbiz Pizza Token Designs

Although several sizes and metals of Showbiz tokens have been made, most of the tokens have the same basic design.

Basic Showbiz Design

A couple Showbiz tokens have a simple "Play Value" design on side 2. One type has the standard design on side 1. This token is much scarcer than most.

The other type of "Play Value" Showbiz token has a different, incuse, design on the other side. I believe that this is the earliest type, and is also much scarcer than most.

Some Showbiz token have "Show Biz" as two words on side 2. Tokens with "Show Biz" as two words seem to be relatively scarce, and I only got a couple recently.

"Showbiz""Show Biz"

Another variation has the standard design, but with a small interlocked "OC" mint mark underneath "Play Value." These tokens were made by Osborne Coinage. Showbiz tokens with the OC mintmark seem to be less common than tokens without the mintmark, but both are fairly easy to find.

"OC Mintmark"

On the reverse side, the words "For Use in Showbiz Pizza Place Only" may be large or small (see below). These tokens also show different obverse/reverse orientations. The large letters type seems more common, though the small letters type is not rare.

There is a joint Showbiz/Chuck E. Cheese token design from 1990. (This token is included on both Showbiz and Chuck E. Cheese token lists.)

Showbiz one sideCEC other side

There is a Showbiz token from Juarez, Mexico (there are two other varieties besides the one shown below, all are fairly scarce):
Side1: "Showbiz Pizza Fiesta Sin Valor Unacamente Para Juegos" (bear head) [2 vars]
Side2: "Venga por el Show Showbiz Pizza Fiesta Recrese por la Pizza"

"sin valor" under head
common reverse
"sin valor" at edge

I have learned of another type of Showbiz token (below). This one has the standard design with 'RWM' mintmark on one side. The other side has the stock "No Cash Value RWM" design. Very few of these are known, it may have been a pattern created by Roger Williams Mint in a bid to get the Showbiz token contract. If anyone has any information about this token, please let me know! [Note: 3/04 several more of these Showbiz/NCV tokens have been found, but it still seems to be pretty scarce]

There was a new ShowBiz that opened up in Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates) a few years ago. The design is about the same as the old ones, but they appear to be made from new dies.. Notice the hard strike and flat, rough surface of the design. Also the rim around the ShowBiz logo is fairly uniform and thicker than the older US tokens. The reverse also has a few dots (the one above the word "Pizza") that may be a die imperfection.

A note about sizes. Showbiz tokens have been reported in both "22mm" and "23mm" sizes. Token manufacturers do not use mm, but measure in inches. "22mm" corresponds to the standard size of 0.880 inch. "23mm" corresponds to 0.900 inch. I have recently found a ShowBiz token which in nominally 23mm, but is larger than 0.900 inch. I have not added it to my list, as this is a tough distinction to make unless you have examples of the different sizes to compare to. If you want to check sizes more accurately, send a note to Roger Williams Mint. If you ask nicely, they'll send you a metal token size gauge. It's a metal rectangle with half-circles cut out in the various standard sizes. It's quite nice!
