Neuchatel 1894
28mm, brass
About this token:
- This is exactly what it says it is and whilst not exactly common does turn
up. It did originally have a loop at the top, which was so that it could be
suspended from a ribbon pinned to your dress or jacket. It is from the Swiss
town of Neuchatel - spelling and name varies depending on whether you are
French, German, romanche or Italian. This was the time when thousands of folks
sang, often in harmony, there being no video, no TV, no radio and nothing
in the way of films worth talking about. They must have been given away to
either visitors or competitors and may have acted as an entry, or re-entry
ticket. Neuchatel was at that date one of the most important towns in Switzerland,
thrusting tiger-economy style and famous for its chocolate, tobacco, watches,
university, metal-working, printing and the like. Of course, bordering on
the eponymous lake, it was the idea place for festivals and the like.
