James W. Curtis
28x26mm, WM (pewter?)
About this token:
- In the 1950's Col. James W. Curtis was a member of the Chicago
Coin Club.
- Tom writes: From what some Texas dealers have told me, Curtis was a retired
military officer and exonumia collector with his own counterstamp die and
plenty of time on his hands. He produced a variety of "personality" pieces
like yours (I've also seen them on chunks of copper) as well as counterstamping
various cheap tokens of the time (late 1960s). I have one of the Shell Meet
the Presidents pieces with his c/s.
- I have a number of items that Curtis has stamped. I got them all when I was living in Austin, TX. It seems he enjoyed making these, but if anyone has more information about him or the tokens, I'd love to hear it!
