About this token:
- Although lettering is raised, entire front design is sunken below the rim.
Reverse is rough and has a raised square protrusion in the center
- Paul writes: While searching for information on a small antique tenon saw
I recently acquired I came across your mystery “token”. My saw was made by
a “C. Gray & Sons, Sheffield”. On the blade along with the name is a fleur-de-
lis type logo (similar to the one in your photo) with the letters “TRY” (not
a V) beneath it. All of this seems very similar to your item. What I am suggesting
is that what you have might be a saw nut (holding the blade to the handle)
or some other tool-related item associated with this company.
- Bob wrote: They made knives in Sheffield, England (listed in 1968 still),
Sheffield was a high quality steel producing town in England. The item illustrated
may have been inset into a wooden box as an advertising element.
- Someone wrote: there is a steel merchant in WharfRoad \Stamford, Lincolnshire
called Chas Gray.
- Several people have suggested this could be a button. While this is possible,
it seems a lot heavier and rougher than most buttons.
- Peter sent a picture of a saw with this saw nut in place:
