Nodome
30mm, copper
About this token:
- June writes: The statue was sculpted by Louis A. Lauck, a well known San
Francisco artist/photographer. He had studios on Montgomery St. and on Clay
St. He came to SF in 1918 from Indianapolis, Indiana and worked as a commercial
artist owning a one man studio before he formed an engraving company sometime
in the 20's. He formed the Lauck/Mann Company with Walter J. Mann. He is responsible
for bringing many artists to San Francisco in the 20's. He is listed numerous
times in the publication "The Commercial Artist" which dates from 1919-1922.
Nodome was a creation that Lou had with regards to a careless worker in a
gas station who causes accidents. Nodome refers to someone with no brain.
He isn't thinking.
- Jim writes: I have no idea about the coin, but I have a five inch bronze
NoDome figure given to my father years ago. It also is clearly marked "Standard
of California." He spent 43 years with Socal.
- Larry writes: I did a Google search yesterday on Nodome due to having found
a 5 inch copper covered lead statue of a worker in bibs with the same "Nodome"
neck and hat feature evidenced on your coin. This statue was more of a paperweight
and was in a family estate. Closer inspection clearly shows Standard Oil of
California on the base of the statue. We believe it was obtained before WWII
(and probably in the 30s).
