About this token:
- See web page: http://www.seattlegreekfestival.com/faq.html,
the festival started in 1960 and 1 token = $1.
- Pete writes: This coin has been in use for longer than since 1996. To my
knowledge, we have never changed the coin. One dollar gives you four tokens.
You buy the tokens at a central booth, and then use them in the surrounding
booths for food and drinks.
- Klint writes: I believe this particular token started to be used in 1996
(maybe 1997), for the annual Greek Festival at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox
Church here in Seattle, Washington (just 'south' of the University of Washington
across the water). Before that they had used white plastic tokens (with different
features). I'm not sure what the exact transaction rate was, but basically
you exchanged a dollar for tokens which could be used to buy different types
of Greek dishes. *YUM* Not sure when the festival normally occurs, but I think
the general range is from August to October. It normally starts on a Friday
and ends 2 days later on a Sunday.
- a source reports: 65,000 of these were made from 1996-1999, they were sent
to Washington state, final destination unknown.
- Note: there is some disagreement in the information above. Perhaps there
have been two different Greek festivals in Seattle?
